REPAIR OF AN ASHDOWN FALLEN ANGEL FA40 COMBO

Ashdown FA40 Image

Hi everybody, although this amp came in a good few years ago I can actually remember it quite well.

Ashdown FA40 Image

I did forget to take a complete front-shot of the finished amp but if you are looking at this article….you already most probably know what it looks like anyway!

Ashdown FA40 Image

Coming in with the fault that it just didn’t sound right & the volume kept disappearing.

Ashdown FA40 Image

Ashdown FA40 Image

Everything out of the case & the full circuit board removed too. Just check-out how much has to be removed to get this board out!

Ashdown FA40 Image

As above.

Ashdown FA40 Image

……and again…..as above.

Ashdown FA40 Image

…….and now to the fault. Just check-out the resistor virtually in the middle of the photo….standing up in the air. I pulled this resistor out of the circuit board…..it had never been soldered from new!! Problem solved!

Ashdown FA40 Image

The rear of the VU meter.

Ashdown FA40 Image

Can you believe this? In order to get the chassis out, everything has to be stripped from the case! This includes the front baffle, speaker, reverb-tank & even some of the wooden bracing for the lower back panel! What a hideous design!!

Ashdown FA40 Image

The wooden bracing that has to be removed!

Ashdown FA40 Image

Piecing everything back together.

Ashdown FA40 Image

……and the two bottom wooden bracing pieces hammered back into place.

Ashdown FA40 Image

All back together as it should be.

Ashdown FA40 Image

……and the reverb tank back-in situ.

Ashdown FA40 Image

All done! I don’t think I ever heard back from the guy who this belonged to so……as they say, no news is good news! Cheers, John.
