SERVICING A FENDER "SILVER FACE" PRO REVERB COMBO

This one was interesting. From the front it certainly is a Fender.

This photo shows the amp finished and on final test. The speakers had been replaced with Celestion G12H re-issues and I kitted it out with a 5U4M rectifier and the pair of JJ E34L’s……please read on and all will be reviled why!

fend10c.jpg

As first removed from the case, a pair of Chinese PM 6L6’s, a National branded 5U4GY and……..a Marshall output transformer!!??

The Marshall output transformer can be seen here along with all the new tubes in place.

Apart from a previous small bias mod (improvement), the Marshall output transformer and Celestion speakers, the rest of the amp was untouched.

fend10f.jpg

Because of the speakers swap and especially the Marshall output transformer; I upgraded the bias supply even more, made a couple of necessary mods to suit EL34’s, beefed-up the HT line (most Fenders can be improved here anyway) and away she went! It won’t sound like a Fender anymore, and by the same token it won’t sound like a Marshall either! What it will sound like is…..well……I don’t really know! What I can tell you is that I never heard back from the customer, so I guess he must have been satisfied with the results/outcome/performance!
