Hi all. This Relyon Hi-Fi amp was brought to me by a real nice gentleman named Clive, from the west-midlands, here in the UK. Clive explained how he won this for about £9 on an EBay auction but ended up paying about £100 to ship it to the UK! However, whilst at first sounding OK, it soon ended up with an annoying "gritty buzz" that was quite off-putting......especially on head-phones which were something that Clive used quite often with the amp. He had rung and asked me if I could be of any help as it would have cost a lot of money to send it back to China and hence this was probably not the most financially viable thing to do! He therefore made a special journey over to my workshop, and the problem soon got sorted!
As it turned out, the heater winding for the the two pre-amp tubes was not grounded (earthed). There are two 48 ohm resistors to ground (one from each side of the 6.3 volt supply) for this purpose. However, these two resistors were both open circuit! My gut feeling was that maybe a faulty batch of resistors was responsible for this situation. Anyway, after replacing these with higher wattage ones, the problem was sorted and Clive went back home a "happy chappie"!
