SERVICING OF A LEAK VARISLOPE STEREO
Hi-Fi
AMPLIFIER

All
finished! The Teonex branded EL84’s are not the best but they
were “doing the business” and were fine so…..they
were retained.

Underneath
as received. You don’t need to be an expert to spot that about a
dozen components had already been changed here. Now, whilst there is no
rule that says you can’t use radial and PCB mount components on a
repair like this, I personally don’t think they look right. I
decided to rip everything out and test/replace with the correct axial
components.

Now…….that’s
a lot better, bloody neat too! (God…..I’m good!). Note the
swelling of the smoothing cap…….top left (not my head!!).

Both new smoothing caps in place.

Pre-amp, top view.

Pre-amp, bottom view before any commencement of work. Virtually every cap needed replacing; and most resistors too!
After all work and chemically cleaned too….looks great!

Again, all the removed junk!
The following are
two email testimonials that I have subsequently received from Ted
& Sharon, for whom I carried out the servicing work on the Leak:
"Having inherited a Leak Stereo 20 Power
Amplifier and Varislope Pre-Amplifier, and having been used to listening to its
sweet sound in the past, I was aware that it needed some attention.
I contacted John Chambers who agreed to overhaul both units.
I left them with him, trusting in his abilities. I could
not have chosen better. Both the beauty of his work and the beauty
of the sound could not fail to please any audiophile. In short,
anybody who finds themselves in the same situation need look no further.
I have no hesitation in recommending John’s thoroughness and
skill.
Edward & Sharon, Norfolk,
UK."
"Dear John,
I am sending you some shots of our set up as promised,
new speakers (the smaller pair) and interconnects, beautiful sounds, the bass as
you predicted is solid and tunefull.
Thanks again.
Ted & Sharon."
