SERVICING OF A WALLACE AC 3500 XT Mk IV AMPLIFIER HEAD

Not really in for a service as such, this amp belongs to Jerry, for whom I have done quite a lot of previous work. As Jerry was in Nottingham on other business, he’d popped-in to see if I could put this on the test gear and see how it was doing. It also needed the pilot “on lamp” sorting too.

I thought it a little strange and unnecessary for such large holes to be cut in the back, to take the standard type plastic nylon jack socket cups, used for the speaker out’s. It would surely have been easier (and much stronger) to simply just drill the right size holes for the speaker jacks!?

With the pilot lamp fixed, a quick check-up on the test gear revealed that she was doing a good 50 watts RMS. Nothing special really; pretty much the same as any other standard 50/60 watt unit with a pair of EL34’s. Although everything was fine at this point in time, I advised Jerry to be aware that some of the caps may need attention in due course, if he intends to keep the amp, of course!
