CHAMP ELECTRONICS -" THE VINTAGE VALVE AMP HOSPITAL"

SERVICING A SOUND CITY LB120 AMPLIFIER HEAD

I really like the LB120 head. In-fact I used to use one for a few years back in my bass-playing days! Great sounding amp! This one was particularly in nice cosmetic condition too.

This one needed a good few components changing/sorting.

........particularly regarding the four diodes forming the bridge rectifier. The one (diode) at the top/right was actually missing making this a sort of ¾'s bridge! The main smoothing caps were kaput too, hence the temporary blobbed-on blue cap here to get her back to life.

All the diodes and smoothing caps replaced correctly now.

And the same here.

Long shot of the chassis.

Pretty tired and an odd-bod set of EL34s shown here. These were obviously sorted before its return to the customer.

Not Partridge transformers on this one. That's pretty rare as they did use them virtually all the time.

Lovely amp though!

Another example of an LB120, this time with Partridge transformers and the addition of a headphone socket near the input jacks. Also note the one ECC83 input tube on its own, whereas it is in-line with the other small tubes on the main amplifier featured above. A lot of "same-model" Sound Citys had some variations like these.
