CHAMP ELECTRONICS -" THE VINTAGE VALVE AMP HOSPITAL"
SERVICING A SOUND CITY CONCORD BASS COMBO AMPLIFIER
Although there is already a Sound City Concord on the site, this is a bass version which does differ in a few ways.
The combo as received, complete with the original square magnet Eminence bass drivers; labelled for Sound City.
New main smoothing caps, as is usually
necessary with these.
New caps here too, along with a splitter balance drive multi-turn pot.
Partridge power transformer here but that's not the case with the output transformer. Also note the size of the output transformer…..This is larger (on the 78 size imperial lamination) than the one fitted to the guitar version of the Concord combo. This would make sense at a better lower end for the bass version.
The customer wanted a more punchy bass sound, and as the original Eminence were a bit "muddy",
I sourced this pair of Fane mid-range 12" drivers that were, ironically enough, also labelled-up for Sound City. Check-out the
customer's (Simon's) e-mail at the end of the article.
the cabinet on the bass Concord is also deeper than its guitar counterpart, obviously
for better bass performance.
"Hi John! Managed to do some recording with my band last weekend and used the Sound City Bass Concord. Very, very pleased with the sound. Prefer it to my Sound City 120 / Ampeg rig!, though that needs a service too. The Fanes are nice, tight and punchy; just what I was after. Need to get the back panel sorted for it as it was a little lacking in low end!
Thanks again for the good work. One day I might ask you to sort out the Sound City 120 head but as I'm using the Concord now there's no immediate hurry.
All the best, Simon."
