REPAIRING A VAMPOWER BABY COMBO AMPLIFIER

This cute baby VamPower Combo was sent to me by a real nice guy……Philip from Scotland, UK.

It had been subjected to our good ‘ole British Royal Mail Parcel Force, and arrived with the damage shown in this and the following photo.

The front baffle wooden bracing had fallen out, the control panel too had fallen out. (Not surprisingly as it is held in place with 2 large(ish) washers that barely do the trick.). This had smashed the top pip off one of the pair of EL84’s in doing so!

As-in almost every case like this…….everything out!

The faulty output transformer off for the rewind.

Just look at the state of this “pilot-on lamp”! The 90 volt Neon was just simply hanging there in mid-air….held in place with a stiff piece of wire and the normal dropper resistor! One of its leads was actually broken, so……on fitting a replacement Neon, I glue-gunned the whole assembly in place…..much stronger & safer now!

The rewound output transformer back in place.

All cabinet repairs carried out by my joinery friend Bob Kingsbury.

All finished & working great now!

I believe the original speakers used in these were branded Adastra? These were imported from Japan and sold in the UK by a company called Eagle Products, if I remember correctly. I went for this nice old Elac for this little baby as the original driver was missing.

A pretty rare amp here!!

And the last word from Philip, the owner:

"Hi there John! Just to let you know the Vampower combo arrived today in perfect condition. Great work. All sounds are now really good.

Thanks for rescuing the amp and doing such a stellar job!

Best wishes.

Cheers, Philip"
